TV FLASHBACK : MATCHGAME 75
Between motion picture work, Joan appeared on many of the popular game shows of the time and in 1975 she appeared on this popular gameshow "Match Game".. which is better known in the UK as "Blankety Blank".. The original USA edition hosted by Gene Rayburn first aired in 1962, but was canceled at the end of it's first run..But then it was revived and ran for many years in various forms, finally ending it's run in 1998 in an incarnation hosted by Michael Burger.. The aim of the game was that the contestants gave a line to the celebrity panel, who then had to fill in the blanked out word..
The clip shown here features Joan with regular team players Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly, and guest stars Richard Dawson, Avery Schreiber and Patti Deutch (Rowan & Martin's).. As was the case with gameshow, many episodes were taped the same day with the assembled panel.. may explain Joan's various garb and wig change...

Actually, the original "Match Game" which debuted in 1962 *was* a hit, running for six years on NBC until 1969 and because of that past success was why it was revived in its more risque form in the 70s where it was an even bigger success.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the standard procedure for US game shows was to tape five shows in one day, six in the case of Match Game since there was a separate nighttime "Match Game PM" program that aired as a once a week syndicated program and Joan appeared on one of those too at the same time.
