'Guiding Light' began as an NBC radio serial in 1937 and switched to CBS in 1948 and ran on airwaves till 1956, with the television broadcast beginning in 1952, running for 57 years, with its combined broadcasts totaling 72 years, the show made the Guiness Book of Records as the second longest running drama in American tv history. The series began under the title 'The Guiding Light' which referred to a lamp in the series main character Reverand John Ruthledge's study that was a symbol for those in need to find him using the light. When the series began it's tv run, it centered on a German immigrant family The Bauers, who had first appeared in 1948 on the radio show.. As the series progressed other families appeared including the Spauldings, the Lewises and the Coopers.. It was finally cancelled in 2009 after over 18,000 episodes..

Joan with Ron Raines

Joan took the role as she had started to spend more time in New York after her 2002 marriage to Percy and she wanted to do work which was close and she didn't have to travel. However she found after a few months that the schedule did not provide time for her to do anything else. Having to shoot five episodes a week, long hours in the studio and scripts which changed up to shooting time, she needed time to promote her new book and she had other offers which were impossible to do. Joan was attracted to the role as the character of Alexandra was 'Guiding Life's' version of Alexis! Below is a piece from New York Post on Joan leaving the show!

LIGHT’S OUT FOR JOAN COLLINS

JOAN Collins is turning off her role on “Guiding Light” a few months earlier than expected.

The former “Dynasty” diva, who joined “GL” as manipulative Alexandra Spaulding only two months ago, says she’s leaving to focus on her two new books and “future projects.”

Collins inked a six-month contract and began appearing on “GL” Sept. 23.

TV Guide soap columnist Michael Logan wrote recently that Collins “is energetic, wonderfully enthusiastic and wholly committed to the gig” – before blasting both Procter & Gamble, which creatively controls the show, and CBS for not adequately publicizing Collins’ role.

Logan also wrote that Collins had “shockingly little to do” since joining the show – “plotwise, she’s a bust,” he wrote.

Insiders say there had been also some “grumblings” that Collins found the work stressful – and that she didn’t like the everyday pacing and changing of lines, often at the last minute.

Collins’ last appearance as Alexandra will air Dec. 23 (10 a.m./Ch. 2). A show spokesman said Collins’ replacement will be named “hopefully very soon.”

Due to the enormous amount of episodes, there are very few episodes on dvd, so the chances of Joan's appearances been released are unlikely...

EVENT UPDATE : DRAWING IN STYLE OPENING .. CROMWELL PLACE .. LONDON .. SEPTEMBER 16TH 2021 ..

Joan with Virginia Bates

Joan attended the opening of a new exhibition of rare and unseen fashion illustrations from the 40's to the present including some by her good friend David Downton. The exhibition called 'Drawing On Style' is housed at Cromwell Place in London and runs from September 15th to 26th..

''It's an honour to be included among my peers in Drawing on Style 2021, and a special thrill to be showing alongside Gruau, Eric, Bouché and Vertès, giants in the field. These extraordinary artists were pioneers of the concept that fashion drawing could be a fine art as well as a decorative one.''

David Downton
Artist

 More details below!

To coincide with London Fashion Week, Drawing on Style will showcase an extraordinary assemblage of over 85 original fashion drawings by the masters of the genre. Many of the works in the exhibition have adorned the pages of the most influential magazines and newspapers of the 20th century capturing the iconic designs of haute couture. The exhibition lineup will also include the exquisite drawings of todays contemporary masters who are powerful forces in their individual fields.

Included in the exhibition will be works by Carl Erickson (1891 - 1958), the original master of fashion illustration who initiated a new approach to documenting fashion in the early 1920s and who, by the 1930s and 40s, was the most sought-after illustrator or all. The undeniable Parisian flair of Pierre Mourgue (1890 - 1969), the divine pencil strokes of René Gruau (1909 - 2004) best known for his work with Dior and the vibrance of the New York fashion scene seen through the eyes of the great Antonio (1943 - 1987) who was the leader of the hedonistic New York fashion crowd in the 1970s and 80s. Alongside these grand masters will be the magnificent work of both Robert Melendez (1944 - ) and Steven Stipelman (1944 - ) who worked predominantly for WWD and W Magazine and the work of Gladys Perint Palmer (1947 - ) who dominated the fashion pages internationally from the 1980s to the early 2000’s.

Leslie Caron by David Downton

Original works by the contemporary masters will include the expert and superbly talented work of international illustrator and celebrated portraitist David Downton (1959 - ) whose original works from his book ‘Drawing Carmen’, published to coincide with fashion icon Carmen Dell’Orefice 90th year, will be on display marking their first showcase within the exhibition, Italian fashion and lifestyle artist Andrea Ferolla (1961 - ) whose strength of line is as powerful as his subjects are charming, the powerful line drawings of multi-disciplinary artist and creative director Ali Mahdavi, the stunning works of Dior artist-in-residence Bil Donovan (1953 - ) and the inspirational work of Jason Brooks (1969 - )  best known for his remarkable imagery creating spell binding campaigns for clients across the world.

David Downton says: “It’s an honour to be included among my peers in Drawing on Style 2021, and a special thrill to be showing alongside Gruau, Eric, Bouché and Vertès, giants in the field. These extraordinary artists were pioneers of the concepts that fashion drawing could be fine art as well as a decorative one. We all owe them a debt.”

Accompanying the exhibition will be a ticketed series of Drawing on Style Talks with artists David Downton, Ali Mahdavi, Jason Brooks, Andrea Ferolla and a masterclass with Gladys Perint Palmer. Joan's Mrs Cheyney Costume...

Cancer Research UK on South Street closed for several days last week, reopening on Saturday (September 11) with plenty of choice for Revival guests.

Lyn Day, store manager, said: “The shop has a fabulous selection of vintage clothing and accessories.

“There are items that are perfect for dressing up in for the Revival or just because you love the retro look. All our vintage lines are donated to us by the community and we love receiving these bits of history. All the profits raised from the sale of our goods is supports research into treating and preventing cancer.”

Joan with Simon Williams in 'Cheyney'
Among the vintage outfits is a suit donated by a local dressmaker who made clothes for the Festival Theatre. She donated a dress, jacket and bag worn by Dame Joan Collins in the play The Last of Mrs Cheyney, which she starred in 41 years ago. This has taken pride of place in the shop window.

The city’s Cancer Research UK store has generated more than £5 million in sales since it first opened in October 1987.

Yvonne O’Connor, area manager, said: “This is an amazing result and one which could not have been achieved without the support of our customers, the generous donations we are given and the help of our wonderful volunteers.”

Take an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at rare and exciting musical and dance sequences deleted from classic Fox films! Vital to an age devoted to film preservation and restoration, this collection of rarities offers behind-the-scenes stories about the cutting of major footage from movies and shows these outtakes as they would have originally been seen. Includes: "Hop, Skip and Jump" performed by Shirley Temple (deleted from "Little Miss Broadway"); a dance number performed by Betty Grable (deleted from "Footlight Serenade"); "The Woof Song" performed by Bert Lahr (deleted from "Love and Hisses"); two dance sequences featuring Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, cut from the film "Cafe Metropole," including the original opening sequence; "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" performed by Ethel Merman and Dan Dailey (deleted from "There's No Business Like Show Business"); Katherine Hepburn's first appearance on film in an early screen test made in 1932, in which she performs a scene from "The Animal Kingdom."

This wonderful 1997 special hosted by Joan, features a selection of outtakes and once lost clips from some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Joan of course a former contract player with Fox, is the ideal choice to host this treasure trove of entertaining film clips. Joan is seen throughout this special and she returned to do the voice over narration for the follow up in 1999, 'Hidden Hollywood 2'...

Hidden Hollywood 2 Reg 1 Dvd Release

As well as clips from various musicals and dramas, Joan also presents a rare screen test for a film she was to do with Robert Wagner called 'Lord Vanity', but the film for some reason was never made..

Tony Scott...

A look at deleted clips from 20th-Fox productions gives a good airing for some shelved segs worth eyeing, at others easily explained away. It's an amusing presentation of bloopers cushioned among delightful outtakes and samples of film work in progress. One of the more startling miscalculations involves Broadway great Ethel Merman in "There's No Business Like Show Business" (1954), when she competes with Dan Dailey on "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better," which Merman had intro'd on Broadway in "Annie Get Your Gun." After the duet, Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O'Connor join Dailey for a spirited dance on the Cinemascope soundstage, while Merman's left alone shaking gourds all by herself. It doesn't seem possible.

No wonder Merman never made it in films, when she was treated like this.

Shirley Temple reminds us of how beguiling she was as a youngster when, before dueting with Jimmy Durante, she impersonates him. Studio chief Darryl Zanuck, according to elegant host Joan Collins, found it “cheeky,” and the imitation was chopped out of “Little Miss Broadway” (1938). A blackfaced Al Jolson medley was spliced out of “Rose of Washington Square” (1939), presumably because of time problems.

Probably the best and most informative segs are those featuring Alice Faye. Actress is all-pro, particularly as she picks up pre-recorded songs on cue. Her mellow “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” for “Rose of Washington Square” is still delicious, but it was dropped. Parts of “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” with Faye, Tyrone Power and Don Ameche (whose embarrassing “Some Sunny Day” was cut) took a dive.

Faye and Betty Grable, her new 20th rival brought in by Zanuck, are a formidable team thrown together into “Tin Pan Alley” (1940) to offset talks of backlot jealousies. Grable’s caught miscuing while dancing to pre-recorded music, and she doesn’t look happy.

Carmen Miranda’s segs are diverting, especially the Navy number (“True to the Navy” for 1945’s “Doll Face”) in which she wears a working lighthouse atop her head. That one bit the brine. She chants “Mama Yo Quiero” in her peppery style for “Four Jills and a Jeep” (1944). It’s easy to see why the number was cut out: It’s inappropriate.

Victor Mature’s shown a couple of times struggling to be a song-and-dance man with Grable, but it didn’t take. And Grable’s seen warbling an axed “This Is It” for “Pin Up Girl” (1944) in which she shares a mike with the legendary, unmentioned Joe E. Brown.

What talent was left on the well-known cutting room floor often seems top-flight stuff, but not by that period’s measures. The discipline, talent, professionalism and seeming ease with which the Temples, the Fayes and Grables, the Jolsons and Mermans and all the rest went about their work pays off these many years later. It’s an entertaining, amusing and interesting adventure.

Take three legends of the silver screen, who hate each other. One tough agent, who attempts to get them together again, to do a reunion show to celebrate the re-release of their classic movie "Boy Crazy!" The scene is set for bitching of the highest order! They all share the same past, with the same man! Throw in a dead mobster, a gay son and a dotty mother and you will find a lot going on for These Old Broads!!

This 2001 TV movie is a must for lovers of classic Hollywood glamour, as it stars the last of it's legendary ladies. With an all star cast, headed by Shirley, Joan and Debbie, it is a joy to see them all together in one film, with the added rare appearance by Elizabeth Taylor. The film was also due to star Ann Miller, but unfortunately she became too ill. It would have been a reunion for Joan, as June Allyson makes an uncredited appearance as a hotel guest. Both June and Ann appeared with Joan in the glamourous MGM release 'The Opposite Sex' in 1956. The film does reunite Debbie and Elizabeth, as they both had a stormy friendship over the years, ever since Elizabeth lured Eddie Fisher away from Debbie, back in the heyday of Hollywood! They do make references to the incident in the film, albeit in a disguised version! The screenplay was written by Debbie and Eddie's real life daughter Carrie Fisher, who turns up as a hooker in the film!

Joan with Debbie, Shirley, Elizabeth & Nolan Miller

Carrie originally planned the screenplay to be sold as a theatrical release, however she could not find anyone interested in the project, finally selling it to ABC. She said about the process..
"To get a film made in Hollywood is hard enough.. To find backing for a film starring a bunch of near seventy year old's is impossible!"
                                       ~~~~~~~~~~~~
To befit a legendary cast, the costumes were created by the legendary couturier of Hollywood glamour, Nolan Miller. Most famous for his over the top, 'Dynasty'  costumes, he has designed for every major Hollywood legend. It was Joan who persuaded Nolan to do the clothes for the film, while he was visiting her St Tropez villa.
"Nolan was the obvious choice! He is the only one left who really knows about glamour!"
Rare shot of Joan with Nolan Miller off set..
But it was not all plain sailing with the legends as Nolan recalled..
"The ladies loved the wardrobe so much that they wanted to keep them. Usually actresses have it in their contracts, to take some of them. However nobody had in this movie! But Elizabeth took hers home and never asked. Joan also wanted some of hers and it all became such an issue with them, that the producers came onto the set. They agreed that each lady could take three outfits each, plus accessories. Well! They took the lot, there was nothing left on the hangers! The producers gave up and couldn't be bothered challenging them about it."
Joan had the most glamorous outfits in the film, however they all looked fabulous. The film however was not the ratings success that had been hoped, with mixed reviews....
VARIETY ....
'A send up of everything Hollywood, from cat-fighting actresses, to over the top demands.. These Old Broads, is simple, nasty, fun! Shirley MacLaine, Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Collins are the ultimate good sports here, playing downtrodden divas, who bicker non stop about nips, tucks and failed marriages. Nostalgic viewers tired of sweep schedules packed with overblown minis and true crime tell-alls will surely appreciate this uncomplicated telepic, full of class acts and sass!"
Joan with Shirley at the LA Screening
THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER...
'They're icons, says the evil TV exec in the movie. People would just tune in to see if they are still alive! Joan plays sexy Addie Holden, oh, forget it! Joan plays Joan, Debbie plays Debbie and Shirley plays Shirley, all of them as if on East German level steroids and double martinis! They turn out to be far better sports than imaginable! You will be surprised to learn that Dame Elizabeth, does not play Elizabeth, she plays a stoned, nymphomaniac agent, by way of Shelley Winters and Mike Myers, Linda Richman! It's her greatest acting stretch in years. By my count the great Dame gets off her rump once! Whomever smeared Vaseline on the lens for her performance, is in line for a special Emmy|! Her hairdresser however, should be charged with felony. It's not hair, it's debris! But it's great to see Joan back, who is not giving enough credit as a delicious comedienne."
THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS....
'These Old Broads, a crude, bawdy, intermittently amusing comedy penned by Reynolds daughter, Carrie Fisher and former 'Seinfield' writer Elaine Pope. Restraint isn't their strong suit. Not unfortunately, is taste. The quartet's most scandalous feature films cant match some of the ribald goings on here, where anatomical references are piled higher than Reynolds hairdo! Joan Collins still looking alluring enough to handle the entire male cast of 'Dawson's Creek'. 'These Old Broads' also weaves in a by now almost obligatory gay storyline, several pratfalls, a cat fight, some production numbers and throwaway roles for Peter Graves and Gene Barry. ABC perhaps merits nominal credit for going against the grain and giving these four mature stars another chance to shine. Taylor easily fares the best, in part because she's not around long enough to let the film collapse around her. The rest are fated to go the distance, still looking marvellous, but very seldom showing us their best sides.'
The girls with Jonathan Silverman
The film is an entertaining ninety minutes in the company of Hollywoods legendary ladies. A reminder of a more glamorous era in entertainment, that sadly they don't want to make them like that anymore! You can buy the film on DVD at the following link..
Directed by James Burrows
'Will & Grace' is one of the big hit sitcoms of all time and it originally ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006, then returning to screens for three more seasons from 2016 to 2019. It also garnered 18 primetime Emmy's, with all of the cast winning at least one award.. It was also one of the first sitcoms to features two main gay characters with successful lawyer Will and flamboyant actor Jack..
Joan appears as a top New York interior designer Helena Barnes whom Grace has admired for many years and who Karen knows only too well.. Joan was due to reprise this role in a later episode, but when she read the script she hated it so much that she couldn't bring herself to do it and the role was switched to a character called Beverly Leslie played by Leslie Jordan.. Joan plays the role to the hilt, sending herself up in a famous scene in a taco bar, where she is seen stuffing a filled taco into her mouth whilst talking to her dog which she keeps in her Vuitton bag.. Wonderful!
Back! Back! Back we go to the dawn of a new romance, as we join Fred and Barney as they search for the prehistoric women of their dreams! However.. Love does not run smooth... What with a conniving playboy, not to mention a glamorous meddling mother in law from hell!! There is only one thing to do! Only one place to go! Join The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas!!
This prequel to the 1994 blockbuster 'The Flintstones', charts the romance between Fred and Wilma. The original film starred John Goodman and Rosie O' Donnell, with Elizabeth Taylor in the role of Pearl Slaghoople, now played by Joan! Director Brian Levant returns and he was more than delighted to helm the production.
"I like things that creat happiness and there is nothing in my mind that makes you smile as much as the imagery of 'The Flintstones'. Our goal was to find people who not only physically resembled the characters, but who also embodied their spirit and then to redefine them."
Joan on set with crew and director Brian Levant
Star of 'The Full Monty', Mark Addy plays Fred and he was more than delighted to get the role.
"I looked at the original animated 'Flintstones' and watched Jackie Gleeson in 'The Honeymooner's', since Gleeson's character and Fred possess the same qualities and faults. They are both big hearted and big mouthed, they don't think before they speak, they get into all manner of scrapes."
'3rd Rock From The Sun', star Kirsten Johnston plays Wilma and she enjoyed the experience...
"I love to create new characters and Wilma is so different from what she ends up being. She is very innocent and naive. She has been protected and lived a very wealthy sheltered life. I have never played an ingenue before and one of the great things about the part is I get to do my own stunts. I love doing physical comedy."
Joan with Kirsten Johnston
The film features over 200 visual effects and puppets of The Jim Henson Creature Shop. It was filmed on location around Los Angeles, with the Paramount Ranch becoming Slaghoople Manor. Director Brian Levant found it challenging recreating the prehistoric age!
"In creating Rock Vegas, we wanted to expand beyond the Flintstones world of stone, bone and lava. We wanted to introduce new elements and vary the palette. We had hundreds of people in a 40,000 square foot warehouse, making moulds and manufacturing cups, glasses, silverware and clothing."
Rare shot of Joan on set
Other locations for the film included, Rocky Peak which was transformed into Fred and Barney's trailer park. The Cal Mat Quarry in Sun Valley doubled for Bedrock, the Melrose Place apartment building, while a local swap meet, doubled for the Bronto King and The Rock Vegas Resort. When it came to Rock Vegas's design, the art department, utilized materials such as fibre glass and special coated glitter filled fifty five gallon drums. Interior's were built on stage, at Universal Studios. The films 27,000 props included platters of food, Seagrock's Seven Shell Whiskey, rock crystal martini glasses, Perrier Jurassic Champagne and giant olives. Costumes for the production were created by Emmy Award winning designer Robert Turturice.
One of Joans costume sketches by Turturice
"I think they were looking for outrageous, flashy clothes and someone who wasn't afraid to just take the risks and go completely over the top. I mean what does couture of BC look like? So many elements go into achieving the look. All the jewellery are stones that have been cast. Everything was made.. The costumes are sewn, but all the seams of leather are glued together and then very narrow strips of leather are threaded through the holes that are punched in the leather, so technically they are all sewn by hand."
Joan looks fabulous in the film, with her costumes been the most over the top, as expected! Ironically Joan took over the role of Pearl, originally played by Elizabeth Taylor. Though it was hardly compensation for 'Cleopatra'!
 The film was not a box office smash as hoped, with mixed reviews....
TOTAL FILM....
'Undemanding tots will adore this Jurassic lark, which overflows with prehistoric puns. CG dinos and colourful sets and costumes. Adults, however may be harder to please, though they will no doubt relish Joan Collin's game turn as Wilma's mother. Still fans of the original series should enjoy comparing the new stars with two dimensional counterparts. However Brian Levant and his four screenwriters weaken the scenario by having a pint sized green skinned ET named The Great Gazoo, passing comment on things. But ignore Gazoo, chances are you'll have a gay old time!"
Rare test shots of Joan
NEW YORK POST....
'A cheerful prequel to the 1994 hit, has a new downmarket, but better chosen cast and a story that must have seemed dated in the paleolithic era! Joan Collins plays Wilma's snobbish mother, she looks great and attacks her first big screen role in years as if it were Noel Coward!'
Joan in a rare prom photo shoot for the film..
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE...
'Watching this new 'Flintstones' prequel is just like being at Universal Studios dinner theatre, only it's edited and there's a sense of camp, so palpable you can taste the velour of the costumes! 'Viva Rock Vegas', is a depressing show of how truly, madly, deeply outmoded Hollywood can be, as the film can barely decide, with it's lame slapstick and diet raunch, if it's aiming for kids or their folks! Wilma's mother is played by Joan Collins, who is histrionic as ever. Her scenes with Harvey Korman as her senile husband, are among the most dejecting pieces of pop camp ever filmed!'
Joan with Jane Krakowski & Stephen Baldwin
