CHELTENHAM LITERATURE FESTIVAL
The books that made me: Joan Collins reveals all

When and where are you most likely to be found reading?
In bed at night, usually in the early hours when I can’t sleep. Or by my swimming pool at my villa in France, which is where I most enjoy it.

Which books are on your bedside table?
I find real life much more interesting than a novel so you’ll find a biography of Mike Nichols, a biography of the Duchess of Windsor and Rupert Everett’s latest autobiography.

Which author’s books do you always devour?
Charles Dickens and Peter James, who sweetly always sends me the latest Roy Grace thriller.

Which book changed your life?
Mazo de la Roche wrote a series of young adult books that I read when I was 13. They made me realise that I wanted to be an author.

Who would be your dream author to hear speak at a literary festival?
Winston Churchill.

What book do you keep meaning to read but never quite get around to?
War and Peace.

Which box sets did you binge during lockdown?
Emily in ParisRay Donovan and Dynasty.

What television appearance are you most proud of?
Alexis in Dynasty.

Is there one television or film appearance you’d like to forget?
More than one.

Who would you want to play you in a film adaptation of your autobiography?
Hedy Lamarr.

Joan Collins is at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on Oct 16, 2.30pm
