THEY SHOOT HORSES DON'T THEY? |
Saddened to hear that the legendary British star of stage and screen Susannah York has just died. Susannah who was also a friend of Joan's made her screen debut in 1960 in the film "Tunes of Glory". Her most famous roles have been in the blockbuster "Superman" where she played Lara, mother to Superman opposite Marlon Brando. Another classic is the controversial 1968 drama "The Killing of Sister George" where she played the naive Alice who was seduced by the terrifying Coral Browne. Susannah also won a Bafta and was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for her role in the 1969 drama "They Shoot Horses Dont They?". Susannah teamed up with Joan in 1972 for the wonderful TV play "Fallen Angels" by Noel Coward. I last spoke to Susannah last year and she told me she loved working with Joan whom she knew for many years. She also mentioned that she tested for the role of Sable Colby in "The Colby's" .. I told her I did not see her as a real bitch! She laughed saying "Oh I can be a Bitch! A very good one!" I shall remember her as a graceful actress and a wonderful star, a true British leading lady. R.I.P Susannah!
