BETWEEN THE COVERS : TV SIRENS... 1987

This book published by Perigee/Putnam in 1987 pays tributes to all those legendary ladies of the small screen, many who began on the big screen!  Joan appears on the cover along with Victoria Principal, Linda Evans and the legendary Barbara Stanwyck.... 200 legendary ladies are featured and it would take ages to list them all but some of my favourites include...Ann Margret, Angie Dickinson, Faye Dunaway, Ava Gardner, Jane Wyman, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Doris Day, Bea Arthur, Valerie Harper, Cloris Leachman, Suzanne Pleshette, Mary Tyler Moore, Betty White, Eva Gabor, Rue McClanahan, Lee Grant, Julie Harris, Angela Lansbury, Barbara Bain, Barbara Eden,Stefanie Powers, Diahann Carroll, Linda Gray, Michele Lee, Dorothy Malone, Donna Mills, Shirley Jones, Lucille Ball, Joan Rivers, Lily Tomlin, Ruth Gordan, Bette Midler, Stokard Channing, Jane Russell, Lana Turner, Joan Fontaine, Anne Baxter, Joan Crawford, Lauren Bacall, June Allyson, Liza Minnelli, Shirley MacLaine, Judy Garland, Carol Burnett, Morgan Fairchild and many more!!!
Here is an edited version of Joan's entry in the book....

' Joan Collins is the Queen Bee of prime-time soaps and miraculous survivor. Of all the Grandes Dames, Collin's stature rests almost entirely on a single role. No not the scheming Empress in "Land of the Pharaohs", though that comes close. It's Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter, Collin's coup is that she doesn't play the part absentmindedly, she calculates every effect. When she bites into a strawberry while delivering a line, she knows precisely at what point to raise her eyes to catch the key light. Her preposterous drag outfits- saucer hats, furry collars, leather vests- remind you of Thelma Ritter in "All About Eve", eyeing a bedful of mink coats...."Looks like a dead animal act"... But if you are tempted to laugh a Collins, forget it. Here is a woman who already gets the joke about herself. Not only does she get it, she revels in it! Her utter narcissism feeds her perverse wit as she devours every actor who stands in her way.. She can handle Linda Evans with both gloves tied behind her back, but there's a new/old girl in town. The town is Hollywood, not Denver and as a new/old girl herself, Collins must have a few tricks tucked in her bodice.. "Sins" was the first, but there are six more deadly ones to go! Stay tuned!! '
"TV Sirens" is a great read and reminds us just how many great stars graced our screens over the years, many alas are gone now, but at least we can continue to view their legacy of entertainment!!                                 TV Sirens: A Tantalizing Look at Prime Time's Fabulous Females
