A group of gutsy ladies must band together to protect their town during the civil war, when all the men go off to fight. Things hot up, when a female doctor Maggie McCulloch arrives in town to visit her Aunt Annie. She soon discovers that Annie runs the local brothel! But Annie has not got long to live and vows to protect her girls, with the aid of her no nonsense niece.. The scene is set for a battle.. Who's sole winners will be The Wild Women Of Chastity Gulch!!

Joan with Priscilla Barnes

During her annual hiatus from filming 'Dynasty', Joan made a series of tv movies, appearing here in a guest role. This 1982 effort, produced by Aaron Spelling features a veritable who's who of 80's television. Joan plays the local madame in a small town during the civil war and brings a touch of glamour to the wild west! But then again most of the star cast are hardly wallflowers!

Joan with Susan Kellerman, Morgan Brittany, Phyllis Davis & Priscilla Barnes

'Three's Company' star Priscilla Barnes stars as the new arrival in town, who ruffles more than a few feathers. Other familar faces include 'Dallas' star Morgan Brittany, famous as the evil Katherine Wentworth on the classic night time drama. Phyllis Davis who appeared in the classic Aaron Spelling crime drama 'Vegas' plays a typical goodtime girl called Sugar! With few moments of drama, including Joan's death scene, the film has a few moments of comedy, not sure if this was intended! Joan's 'Dynasty' co-star Pamela Bellwood and 'Matt Houston' star Lee Horsley also appear..

Joan with Howard Duff

There is little background info regarding the film, as it was a tv movie, largely forgotten about now, is still worth a look for it's always entertaining cast. Donny Osmond turns up as a wounded soldier who grabs the attention of the ladies.. Joan would team up with Donny many years later in the video version of the hit musical 'Joesph'..

''The Wild Women of Chastity Gulch,'' a Sunday movie on ABC at 9 o'clock, carries one of the more exploitative titles of the season. The women in question are hardly bawdy, never mind wild. And the film features no such place as Chastity Gulch. The action takes place in a Civil War mining town named Sweetwater, Mo. But an Aaron Spelling production is generally reluctant to avoid exaggeration or the promise of violence.
''The Wild Women of Chastity Gulch'' opens with just about all the town's menfolk riding off to join the Confederate Army. They are seen saying goodbye to their wives and sweethearts and then, somewhat sheepishly, waving to the flashier women gathered on the balcony of Annie's School of Dance. In addition to being madam of the bordello, Annie, played with lots of hard-edge makeup and hair spray by Joan Collins, owns half the town through the generosity of her clients. The ''good'' women may detest her, but they can't get rid of her.
As the men are leaving, Maggie (Priscilla Barnes) is arriving, direct from medical school in Baltimore. Maggie is Annie's niece, but she has no idea where the money for her tuition has been coming from. After seeing the house and meeting Annie's girls, Maggie is ready to get out fast, but her aunt, who turns out to be fatally ill, persuades her to stay on for six months. In no time at all, Maggie finds herself refereeing a knockdown brawl among the women of the town, who find Annie's place a public nuisance, and Annie's girls, who retort with lines like, ''Go hang by your corsets.'' Annie herself keeps reaching for another glass of gin.
Annie finally persuades both sides to try working together to protect the town while the men are away. This tentative arrangement becomes a necessity when a nasty band of Union soldiers, led by a sadistically twitching Howard Duff, rides in. Mr. Duff's son has been wounded, and he is threatening dire reprisals if something isn't done to save him. His men have captured a handsome Confederate physician (Lee Horsley), but he is temporarily disabled. Maggie, of course, will have to perform the operation under the Confederate doctor's guidance. On top of everything else, the wounded son is played by none other than Donny Osmond, who is clearly going to survive when he begins flashing his famous mouthful of teeth

In the end, the women are forced to work together vigorously when the Union villains become threatening again. There is a final noisy shootout, and when the Rebel men return, all of the women seem resigned to sharing them equally. There is a slight hint of orgiastic pleasures to come.
This entire enterprise is one of the more startling curiosities of the season. Also in the cast are Pamela Bellwood, Phyllis Davis, Jeanette Nolan, Morgan Brittany and Lisa Welchel.

This tv movie is seldom screened outside the USA and to my knowledge has never been on dvd.. As it features a wonderful cast of familar faces, hopefully it may get a release from Warner Archive at some point..

This forgettable film would certainly not be on Joan's list of favourite films as she had many problems with it .. The film began life as a coming of age drama 'Growing Pains', with Joan in a small role of the mother of the lead characters girlfriend. Joan only had a few days shooting on the film, when she had problems with the producers over nude scenes which she had not agreed to. The film however never got a release at the time of completion in 1979, as the distributors went under and the film lay in a vault somewhere or other. Jensen Farley aqquired the film in the early 80's and seeing the trend for the younger man /
older women film popular at the box office,
they decided to market it as that. They however also decided to insert nude scenes into the original film passing them off as Joan.. To make matters worse, they gave Joan top billing, also trying to cash in on her new 'Dynasty' fame, but made the mistake of releasing a poster with a nude models body with Joan's face superimposed on to it!

Final Approved version

Joan was not too pleased at this and sued the production company, who issued another poster featuring a bikini model, with Joan's head, this was still not acceptable, finally a suitably 'Dynasty' clad gowned model was attached to Joan's head! In the end the poster had an artist drawn image of Joan as shown above. Joan however was not the only star to sue, co-star Carrie Snodgress also had her named removed from the film, she was only in the film very briefly.

The film was released on video in the 80's by Universal on their CIC label, it was released on DVD in the USA on VCI but this release is no longer available, but you can view cover below!

The world of high fashion and top modeling looks glamorous from the outside, but for fifteen year old Laurie Caswell, the glamour, the fame and the wealth is not all that it appears.. After Laurie meets Taryn Blake, a friendship ensues and soon Laurie is riding the crest of the high fashion wave! But can a teenager survive the cutthroat world that eats the weak.. Where only the strong survive? All alone, with no one to turn to..the creases are beginning to show on the Paper Dolls!!

Daryl Hannah & Alexandra Paul

This 1982 tv movie was the first in a series of movie's of the week, Joan starred in as part on her 'Dynasty' contract, which also included an episode of 'The Love Boat' around this time. Set in the world of teenage modeling, the film proved to be popular plus a ratings winner. It later resurfaced a couple of years later as a proposed night time drama, but the series was shortlived. The role of Racine in the series was played by another 80's prime time vixen, the eternally glamorous Morgan Fairchild, with Jennifer Warren, the only star returning from the original movie. Joan's character of Racine, the tough modeling agency boss, is not far removed from her Alexis character on 'Dynasty', complete with a Nolan Miller wardrobe! Among the cast were early roles for up and coming stars Daryl Hannah and Alexandra Paul.

Hollywood makeup artist/stylist David Frank Ray recalls....

" Paper Dolls was inspired by the life of Brooke Shields and the lives of other fourteen year olds making it big in the modelling biz. I was brought on board as a 'fashion consultant', and to design the makeup looks for the photo's, ads and magazine covers, that would appear on screen. I even managed to get Priscilla Presley's then boyfriend, Mike Edwards a role as one of the top models! It was fun to do, but I never hit it off with Alexandra Paul, however I fell in love with Daryl Hannah, she was a great gal. I attended a private screening of the movie and I told Aaron Spelling, who was producing that I thought Daryl had a great future ahead of her. Aaron seemed more excited about Alexandra. But both ladies went on to have good careers!"

Joan with Alexandra Paul

'Paper Dolls' has not been released to dvd as yet and sometimes turns up on cable, with all the glamour of the 80's and of course Joan and a worthwhile cast, it is definately worth seeking out!

Costumes by Nolan Miller
Theme by Bill Conti

Of the many tv appearances that Joan has been associated with, there is no denying that Alexis on 'Dynasty' is her most memorable role. Apart from putting her career back on top, it also insured her a place among the legends of television who have reach iconic status, of which there are few. There has been endless pages written about the series over the years, so I will only give a short reminder of the origins of the series.. Due to the success of 'Dallas' which ran on the CBS network, ABC were set on their own night time soap to rival the top rated saga of the Ewings, who had a most popular character of JR played by Larry Hagman. So Richard & Esther Shapiro created a saga called 'Oil' which featured the exploits of two super rich Denver families. The series debut was in 1981 as a two part mini series and the star of the show was set to be George Peppard as Blake Carrington, but he proved to be very dififcult to work with and he was unhappy with his character and so the scenes were reshot with John Forsythe now the star of the show..

Linda Evans with George Pappard in original shoot of 'Oil'

However the first series of the show, now renamed 'Dynasty', failed to capture the viewers the way 'Dallas' had and it ran the risk of been cancelled. The network knew the show lacked one main ingredient that 'Dallas' had and that was lack of one villainous character in the same vein as JR Ewing. So as the first series dragged itself along to its climax, it was decided to introduce a new character onto the show in the form of Blake Carrington's ex wife Alexis. She made her entrance during the final days of the trial where Blake was accused of murdering his son Steven's lover Ted. Of course the new character only made an entrance in the last episode, the role had not been cast as yet and her face was disguised with a veil.

Joan's first scene on 'Dynasty' as Alexis

The search was then on for a suitable actress to play the role and everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to Sophia Loren were courted, but deemed unsuitable for many reasons, the network settled on actress Jessica Walter, but the Shapiro's and Aaron Spelling were not convinced as they had another in mind, whom they had noticed on an episode of 'Aaron's hit show 'Fantasy Island', a certain Joan Collins.. After protests form the network the Shapiro's and Spelling stood firm and as they say the rest is history!

'Dynasty' ran from January 1981 to May 1989 and topped the ratings many times and won many awards including for Joan a Golden Globe. Soap Opera Digest and People's Choice. The series was not only a ratings winner, but also defined the fashion of the 80's and Joan was and still is a fashion icon who is synomous with that decade. Also credit must go to award winning designer Nolan Miller who created the most wonderful costumes for 'Dynasty' and apart from been a good friend of Joan's he also designed every outfit she wore on the show.. Nolan was the favourite designer of most of Hollywood's true legends from Bette Davis to Lana Turner, Ann Margret, Barbara Stanwyck, Elizabeth Taylor & Sophia Loren to name but a few! 'Dynasty' is one of those timeless shows that will always find an audience wherever it is replayed and although there is a revamped modern version currently playing, it is no match for the glamour, style and class of the original.

Nolan with Joan & Sophia at Costume Awards

'Dynasty' has been available on individual season box sets for some time and most recently a box set of all seasons with wonderful new artwork which places Joan centre stage. All previous releases gave John Forsythe his star billing and place him forefront on all promo photographs.. You can see the updated artwork below and you can order ...

'' It was vital for the story that the girl's had a rapport.. I did not know Pauline, though of course I had worked with her husband John Alderton in an earlier episode .."GeorgyPorgy"..I also enjoyed her in "Upstairs Downstairs".. It worked perfectly..The chemistry was right and we got on like a house on fire.."

Joan with Pauline Collins & Brewster Mason

Part of the episode was filmed in the Wimbledon Theatre..now the New Wimbledon...
Pauline commented on her role in the episode..

" Appearing with Joan was great fun.. She and I became great friends.. She is very funny, very witty and very immediate.. She plays a sophisticated girl who is out to get her man! I'm also after him but Joan wins because she has more oomph!"

JOHN ALDERTON as Rev George Duckworth
LALLY BOWERS as Miss Elphinstone
MARGARETTA SCOTT as Lady Birdwell
ANN BEACH as Miss Unwin

GRANT BARDSLEY as George as a Child

Directed by Graham Evans

Julia Roach has designs on the new Reverend, she soon finds out he does not practice what he preaches, when the sins of the father or mother, in his case, come back to haunt him...with Julia's life in danger when she encounters Georgy Porgy....

Joan was asked to do a second episode of  "Tales" and she plays a dual role of a sexy parishioner and a batty mother who is very unconventional.. The episode ran into trouble with the Bishop of Norwich, due to a scene where the Reverend stars hallucinating and imagines his prim and proper congregation of ladies are all naked.. The scene was set to film in a church in Norwich, but the Bishop objected to a bevy of naked women littering the church... Eventually the scene was shot in a crypt and ultimately the scene was cut down as to avoid the tv censors.. It proved to be a storm in a D Cup!! This episode was of the strange variety, with Joan playing two parts and John Alderton a deeply disturbed vicar.. But it's an interesting story and Joan is as reliable as ever in the dual role of sexy Julia and the over maternal Claire..John Alderton turns up later in Joan's career when he appeared in her BBC series "Tonight At 8:30", while Lally Bowers previously appeared in "Fallen Angels"...

BRIONI FARRELL as Cleopatra
PATTI DAVIS as Charmain
JAMES WHITWORTH as Abdu The Slavemaster

Directed by George McCowan

Lucy Atwell has a fantasy to be Cleopatra, but she soon realises that fantasies can soon become deadly
reality as she becomes a pawn in a plot to overthrow the Queen, can Marc Anthony save her! She needs the help of My Fair Pharaoh...  Fred Webster wants to have special powers that will allow him to move things at will, but there is a price to The Power!

When Joan accepted the role on "Fantasy Island", she was intrigued by the fact that the character Lucy's fantasy was to be Cleopatra. Joan of course was all set to play the legendary queen in the movie version, which of course was eventually played by Elizabeth Taylor.. But little did Joan know that the
role would be an unofficial audition for the role of Alexis, as Aaron Spelling mentioned noticing Joan in the episode, thus putting her in his mind when they were trying to cast the now iconic role... "Fantasy Island" like "The Love Boat" and later "Hotel" are now TV classics and were old fashioned entertainment produced by Aaron Spelling and gave legendary stars another chance at a featured role on prime time..  The series like "The Love Boat" started life a two TV movies, before they were picked up for the now classic series.. Each week the mysterious Mr Roarke and his side-kick Tattoo welcomed visitors to the island, to live out their wildest fantasy.. Each cast list read like a roll call of familiar names from films and television..
Joan with Ron Ely

Joan's co-star in this episode is Ron Ely who will be forever remembered as "Tarzan" from the popular 60's series.. Ron also guested on Joan's episode of "The Love Boat", although not in her segment.. Ron is now retired from acting and writes novels.. Other appearing were the great 50's character actress Ruth Roman and always reliable Carol Lynley.. Joan looks stunning in her Cleopatra garb, which she mentioned part of was worn by Claudette Colbert in the 1934 classic.. "Cleopatra" .. While other costumes came from the 60's version that Joan should have starred in..and of all things some of Cher's old outfits from Caesar's! .. Never-the-less it is an entertaining hour and it set the wheels in motion for Joan's career to hit new heights.. Who says Fantasies can't always come true!!

Season 3 of 'Fantasy Island' which includes Joan's episode is available from Shout Factory and you can order at the following!
