Joan Collins should be our Tsarina of Sass
- The Daily Telegraph
Can someone please appoint Dame Joan Collins the UK’S “Tsarina of Sass”? Obviously, the title doesn’t exist – but if the Government can appoint spurious “social mobility tsars” and “families champions”, surely the Legendary actress deserves a similar honour?
The idea came to me as my husband and I enjoyed a double date with Dame Joan and her film producer husband of 17 years, Percy Gibson, on Friday, where the new face of Charlotte Tilbury cosmetics and I were both automatically seated “looking out over the restaurant, as every woman should be”. Dishes were sent back, tweaked, and instantly returned… and all my husband’s impertinencies flung back in his face. “I think it’s more likely I’ll be doing the eulogy at your funeral,” she scoffed, as he suggested a couple of choice anecdotes he might tell at hers.
That give-as-good-as-youget repartee is real female empowerment in my eyes. Not the woe-is-me victimhood young women are so keen to embrace. So maybe the gendered and therefore obviously patronising “tsarina” isn’t quite as problematic as the outdated notion of “sass”. Saucy, mischievous and unapologetically feminine, it’s everything a 2019 woman isn’t allowed to be.
