Moonbase Alpha picks up a call for help from a nearby space craft which contains the remains of a dying world, that has travelled through space for 900 years! Deciding to mount a rescue mission, they discover an environment of ageless beauty, but populated by wretched looking creatures.. But it soon becomes apparent that all is not what it seems and the appearance of a beautiful leader, who holds the key to a deadly secret that could wipe out Moonbase Alpha, Forever!!

Like "Star Trek", "Space 1999" was not a big success on it's first screenings, but over the years it has built up quite a cult following.. First screened in 1975, the series ran for two seasons and was the last production from Gerry & Sylvia Anderson, legendary creators of "Thunderbirds" and other cult favourites..
Set in the year 1999, it all begins when nuclear waste is ignited by magnetic radiation, which causes the moon to shift from earth's orbit. This shift means that all 311 inhabitants of space station 'Moonbase Alpha' are stranded...in charge of the crew is Commander John Koenig (Landau)..who is aided by Dr Helena Russell (Bain) and scientist. Professor Victor Bergman.. Their mission now is to find a new home, along the way they encounter many strange civilisations, not all of them friendly!

On casting the series, Sylvia Anderson recalled..

" When we were casting the series, we saw many people and wanted Robert Culp to star.. I thought he was far out and just the right person. However Lew Grade rang us and said he felt someone like the stars of "Mission Impossible" would be his choice. That is how Martin and Barbara came to the series.. However I did not feel they were right for the parts. I was determined to cast Culp, but then the network changed it's production heads and we ended up with Martin and Barbara, who I am not saying were no good, but I do think they could have been better!"

However Sylvia was impressed with Martin & Barbara's efforts in establishing their characters for the series as she recalled a dinner at the Polo Lounge at The Beverly Hills Hotel.

'' I remember spending long hours with Martin and Barbara when we were setting up Space 1999. They were helping me invent their own background as lead characters in the series. They were sticklers for detail and over dinner at The Beverly Hills Hotel, they began talking about their fictitious relatives and school days. It seemed a little odd that we should spend so much valuable pre-production time talking about events that we would never see or hear about on screen. Yet it was all part of the method acting philosopy that had served Martin so well in his brilliant character performances.''

Joan with Martin and Barry Morse and guest star Dennis Burgess

Joan was one of many guests and she had worked with Martin Landau on "Mission Impossible", Lew Grade was also Joan's godfather, as he had been in a partnership with Joan's dad Joe back when she was growing up.

Series co-star Barry Morse recalled.

" I enjoyed making the series and working with it's many guest stars which included my good old friend Peter Cushing and I recall Joan Collins, who was a big name. She was very disciplined and well behaved! However I was astonished to learn that at the point when we started to shoot the series, we had only one script..Which in my book was an act of lunacy..Even in that one script, there was no indication of the backgrounds of any of the characters. I wrote a biography for my character, Victor Bergman, where I saw him as a much more eccentric sort of character, than he turned out to be in the series. I also hated the uniforms that everyone else had to wear. I did not think my character would ever wear a uniform..After all he was a senior world class scientist!"

You can get the complete series on blu-ray from Network with many features.. More details here!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOAN!

Today is a special day as it is our favourite Dame's birthday and we hope she has a most wonderful day.. Happy Birthday Joan!

PRESS UPDATE : THE MAIL ON SUNDAY .. MAY 23RD 2021 ..

'I need you plunger, Percy' barked Dame Joan Collins... we all fell about laughing

Sunday, May 16

Dame Joan Collins has returned to Britain to do my Life Stories show after spending most of this latest lockdown in Los Angeles.

‘Just to warn you,’ announced the nation’s most dynamic octogenarian on arrival for our reunion dinner at Ivy Chelsea Garden, ‘I’ve been locked up in quarantine for five days so feel like a caged animal who just got released.’

To prove the point, she promptly barked at her husband across the table: ‘PERCY, I NEED YOUR PLUNGER!’

‘Blimey,’ I sniggered, ‘it’s a little early in proceedings for that isn’t it, Dame Joan?’

All eyes turned to a bemused Percy.

‘You need my WHAT, darling?’ he replied.

‘YOUR PLUNGER!’ Joan repeated, louder. ‘URGENTLY!’

By now, I was cackling like Sid James in Carry On Camping after Barbara Windsor’s bikini top flew off.

‘What’s so funny?’ asked Joan. ‘When Percy plunges it in, everything fires up again.’

Now everyone was falling about laughing, and the penny finally dropped with the jet-lagged legend. ‘You have very dirty minds, it’s a special charger for my phone!’

Joan revealed she and Percy have been phoned 14 times by NHS Test-and-Trace checkers in the five days since they returned to make sure they’re keeping to the rules.

I’m delighted to learn we finally appear to have a system that actually works, but it begs the question as to why the hell we didn’t have one ready to go before the pandemic struck, as many Asian countries did after previous scares like the SARS epidemic?

It would have saved so many thousands of lives.

Joan’s doing Life Stories for the second time to celebrate her 70th year in the movie industry. ‘How many feature films have you made?’ I asked. ‘74.’

‘I’ve only been in eight,’ I replied, ‘but they’ve grossed over $2 billion at the box office.’ ‘I don’t believe it!’ exclaimed an incredulous Joan. ‘Name them.’

‘The Campaign with Will Ferrell, Flight with Denzel Washington, The Criminal with Kevin Costner, One Chance with James Corden, World War Z with Brad Pitt, Men In Black International with Liam Neeson, Entourage with Jeremy Piven and the Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour.’

The table fell into stunned silence as the full glory of my Hollywood body of work hit home. ‘What’s YOUR cumulative gross, Joan?’ I chuckled.

‘Not as much as that!’ she retorted, ‘but you’ve always been a lot grosser than me.’

Joan was adamant she won’t cry during Thursday’s recording. ‘I’m too tough,’ she insisted. ‘You’ll never crack me.’

Five minutes later, she instantly welled up when I mentioned something that’s happened since her first Life Stories appearance 11 years ago. ‘Damn, you’ve got me going already. Stop it.’

This 70's series is based on the popular crime series of mysteries featuring the popular character Ellery Queen, a Harvard graduate and a non fashionable in his sensible clothes and tweed jackets. Ellery shares his apartment with father an Inspector, in Manhattan. The character first appeared on screen in the 1935 film "The Spanish Cape Mystery" starring Broadway theatre actor Donald Cook, followed by nine more films with  Ralph Bellamy being the more memorable Ellery.. The character first hit TV screens in 1950 with the series "The Adventures of Ellery Queen" starring Richard Hart, who suddenly died of a heart attack four episodes into the series at the age of thirty five.  The role was then taken over by actor Lee Bowman, but failed to catch on with audiences and was canceled after one season.. Two more series appeared during the 50's, starring George Nader and Lee Phillips, but neither of these lasted very long..  It was 1971 before another TV production was filmed, a failed pilot starring Peter Lawford as Ellery, with Harry Morgan as his dad... Finally in 1974 a series emerged that would make a lasting impression, even though it only last one season.

Joan with Guy Lombardo

Jim Hutton starred as Ellery with David Wayne as his dad and each episode assembled a cast of movie and TV veterans including Eva Gabor, Ida Lupino, Eve Arden, Anne Francis, Ray Milland, Donald O'Connor and of course Joan who co-stars in this episode with Farley Granger, her co-star from her 50's Fox film .. An excellent cast is assembled for this episode and even though the series was short lived, it is destined to remain a favourite among mystery fans..

AKA : "The Devil Within Her"    "The Monster" ..
 (c) 1975  RANK 90 MINS COLOR

The arrival of their new baby son, should have been a joyous occasion for Lucy and Gino Carlesi. But their joy turns to fear, as their new baby shows disturbing signs of unease and violence! It soon becomes apparent that demonic forces are at work and no one is safe from the tiny terror! When the nanny dies in mysterious circumstances, then Gino disappears, along with the family doctor, Lucy must face the terror alone! Only then, does she realise that she has had The Devil Within Her! As she draws her last breath, her baby screams mummy! I Don't Want To Be Born!!

Joan and Raplh Bates on set

This popular shocker, first began life as a screenplay entitled "The Baby", but it was completely rewritten as "I Don't Want To Be Born!". Although filmed in London at Pinewood and on location in Chelsea, plus a house in Kensington, the fim was financed by Italian and Canadian backers. However well into production, the money ran out and Rank had to put up the remainder of the funds to complete the film.

Director Peter Sasdy recalls.....

"The Italian producers wanted a star name and we got Joan, who had made a return to the screen after a distinguished career in British films. I was delighted that she did, she was and still is, such a professional person. Always first on the set, none of what I call Prima Donna behaviour, which people would like me to say that she was!"

Joan with Donald Pleasence

At the time of the film's release, Joan commented to the American International press office..

" I certainly wouldn't want to be labeled a 'Queen of Horror', but I thoroughly enjoyed making the film. The terrifying thing about it, is the developing implications that the child is somehow connected with several murders! But I would rather be in a fantasy orientated horror film, than a movie depicting brutal violence and sex! Parts for women these days, fall into definite categories. The harassed heroine or The sexy bird look!"

Joan with John Steiner

The film did good business at the UK box office and in the USA, where it was re-titled "The Devil Within Her" and released by American International. But as expected the reviews were mixed.

ROGER EBER ...

''When it comes to trashy horror exploitation, the British are about the best and more often than not, Donald Pleasence is one of the reasons! He plays gravediggers, mad scientists and humble retired soldiers with penchants for voodoo. He always seems faintly bemused by the terror he causes! The odd thing about this film is, it has no ambition to be good, but neither does it have the knack of being interestingly bad. Joan Collins does her best to look smashing in every scene, (she even wears a bloody scratch, with a certain chic!), but Pleasence never gets to cut loose with his vengeance is mine, shtick and the baby doesen't even grow hair on its face!"

Joan with Caroline Munro

But strangely enough a good review came from...

VARIETY....

"This is an exceedingly stylish thriller, about a satanically possessed infant. Joan Collins stars and looks, and acts splendidly as the begrieved mother. Director Peter Sasdy, whose pacing is near flawless, works as much below the surface as above it, with great effect."

Joan with Ralph Bates

The film has been a staple of the video scene for many years, having been re-released under many awful titles such as "It's Growing Inside Her" and "Sharon's Baby". Considering the baby is born during the titles and there are no characters called Sharon in the film, these titles are meaningless! The film was re-released by Rank in the early 80's with the title "The Monster", but under any title the film has an excellent cast of British stars and in the context of the horror genre, it is certainly worth a look!

Original video release from the 80's
