PRESS UPDATE : CANAL STREET NEWS ... SEPTEMBER 13TH 2016 ..

Joan Collins on Tour at The Lowry

Stage, Big Screen and Small Screen star Joan Collins on tour
OK let’s get this straight, my name is Chris and I am a Joan Collins fan. I am from the generation who spent their formative years watching Dynasty, to us Joanie has an almost mythical quality.
So imagine the hushed excitement in Salford’s Lowry Theatre as we all waited for her new show entitled Unscripted.
Joan Collins on Tour at The LowryI’ve been to see her Evening with Joan tour a couple of times but this was a different affair, she was at the mercy of our unfiltered questions. Brave some might say, crazy others would but luckily there weren’t any truly horrific moments.
Aided by her ever faithful fifth husband Percy, Dame Joan appeared on the stage in all her finery and regally sat and took questions from her subjects. At the beginning it was made clear that she wouldn’t answer questions on certain subjects such as Brexit or the US Presidential Elections. We won’t think about her political leanings, let’s not ruin a perfectly good night. We were also warned not to go into too much gushing about how much we like her.
She has received bad press about this rule but having been to a similar evening with Roger Moore and listening to man, who clearly rarely sees daylight, harping on about all the films he loved and why, I can understand the need to limit the worship. It’s awkward and unfair to others who want to ask a question.
So with the rules set, Joan and Percy settled in for a Salford grilling. It was quite refreshing to hear one of the most interviewed women in the world answer things that she hadn’t been asked before.
So what nuggets did we glean?
The obligatory beauty regime question was asked, it’s understandable. She gave us a tip which she got from Paul Newman, who, she confided, could drink most people under the table, he would submerge his face in ice for five minutes every morning.
Naturally Joan uses cotton pads and ice but Percy says after 14 years he still hasn’t got used to the yelp every morning. I can only assume there is a shortage of ice in the Greater Manchester area this morning as everyone murmured that they were going to try that.
Her memory bank reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood. She gave us a wonderful memory of working with Gene Kelly on her 80s mini-series Sins when they were on the River Seine and a gust of wind took her hat and his toupee off down the river and they had to shove a hat on his head to complete the take. She met Marilyn Monroe at one of his parties who struck her as a lonely figure and warned her against the wolves of Hollywood.
However it was when she was interacting with the audience that she really came to life. One lady asked for relationship advice, she has been with her partner for 23 years and engaged for 17 but he wouldn’t marry her, what was her advice? “Leave him” said Joan with more than a touch of Alexis.
She was also asked about her memories of appearing in Badly Drawn Boy’s video for Spitting In The Wind. The whole experience seemed to have confused her, she realised she’d never appeared in a music video and thought she’d give it a whirl but was obviously a little nonplussed from the whole thing.
One audience member asked her what she would have done had she not acted. There had been a few choices ranging from a detective, she loved her detective set she was given at Christmas, to writer, fashion designer to interior designer.
She told us that a house should always be changing and she is regularly moving things around in her homes and getting Percy to move pictures. In terms of fashion design, she still designs her own outfits including the first outfit she wore that very evening.
But the night definitely built into a finale for me as at the very end she answered my question. I turned into a total fanboy and with heart pounding I asked her if she ever channelled Alexis in her personal life. She told us that she regularly channels Alexis at airports where she gets the pat down every time she travels which definitely seemed an annoyance, especially as Percy never gets stopped much to his glee.
With that she was gone. It’s a brave thing to open yourself up to totally unfiltered audience questions but if anyone can handle it, it’s our Joan and with this being her last ever tour, it was a great gift to fans who had supported her for many decades.

PRESS UPDATE : NORTH WEST END ... SEPTEMBER 13TH 2016

Sometimes there are moments in your life when you know you have been touched by something a little special. I am in no way star-struck nor am I going to get all gooey and gushing and tongue-tied when in the presence of film royalty; but I do know when I have witnessed something really quite unique, and this evening was one of those times.

Sitting on chairs which looked like they belonged in Buckingham Palace rather than a theatre, and dressed impeccably in evening wear and diamante, this legendary star proved she was still as sharp as a knife, and came across as intelligent, fun-loving, sincere, extremely down-to-earth and still very much in control!

Seated opposite husband number 5, Percy, who acted as host and a foil for the audience's questions, and in front of a large screen upon which relevant stills and clips of her career were shown throughout the evening, she chatted about her life taking questions from the audience.

Although there must have been a certain 'format' which these evenings take as this her new show tours the country; nothing can prepare her for the totally spontaneous questions which will undoubtedly be different each night, and her alert and quick-witted responses to these were as good as any A-list stand-up comedians'. When asked by one audience member to proffer advice on her rather stagnant, uneventful and boring monogamy having been with her partner for 23 years, 17 of which she was engaged, Joan's answer was simple, "Leave him!"; and when another rather plucky chap asked her about the time she appeared on 'Good Morning Britain' wearing the same dress as Piers Morgan, she replied, "Wait 'til I tell Piers that! - don't you mean Susannah Reid?" Her husband then cut in and asked her, "Why what could you have done, gone home and changed?!" "No", retorted Joan, "but she could have!"

The subjects ranged from her early years living in London and being evacuated during the Blitz, through to her leaving for 'the cool, crazy and jolly good' Hollywood at the age of 21 and being attached to a studio, and living the glamorous high-life of parties with stars, name-dropping along the way. Her career highs, with Dynasty proving to be not just her but the audience's number one choice, and also her career lows too as she talked about working on a horror B-movie called Empire Of The Ants. I would have thought at this point someone might have mentioned her roles in The Bitch and The Stud, both films semi-pornographic and based on her sister's novels, but no-one did. She did talk about her sister Jackie though, and you could tell her love for her now sadly passed-away sister was genuine, saying that even from the age of ten Jackie would write stories - very good stories - which she would illustrate since at that time she harboured a desire to be a costume designer - something which has stayed with her all her life, as she designs her own clothes still, and has designed many of the clothes she has worn in her films, and most of her clothes on Dynasty. She talked about alternative career choices, [costume designer and a private detective]; her beauty routine [she swears by ice. Ice cubes wrapped in cotton wool on the eyes, or even immersing your head in a bucket of ice]; and she talked about the problems in her life too - an acrimonious court case which she won and the tricky and often almost impossible balancing of her career with being a mother of three young children.

I think my favourite anecdote of the evening came when Joan talked of her interview with Joan Rivers, who asked her, "which husband was the best lover?" to which her riposte was, "why, yours dear!"

For all the glitz and glamour, Dame Joan is an extremely centred lady with a 'take-me-as-I-am' approach to her life and career, which is still blossoming [although maybe not on Hollyoaks!], and she is always ready with a witty put-down and a glint in her eye.

What a truly inspirational icon, and one of the last stars to have lived through that wonderful 'Golden Era' of Hollywood. The standing ovation could easily have gone on for much longer, but Dame Joan cut it short with her final thought for the evening, "I live my life as if every day will be my last - one day it will".

Review: Dame Joan Collins Unscripted in Salford

13 Sep 2016

The audience were almost as entertaining as the Hollywood legend herself at the dazzling Joan Collins Unscripted event at The Lowry Theatre

Dripping in dazzling diamantes, Dame Joan Collins was every inch the Hollywood icon as she took her seat - on a golden throne, naturally - for her “Unscripted” one woman show at Salford’s Lowry Theatre.
Well, we say one woman, but Dame Joan was joined on stage by one very important man too - her husband Percy who acted as host with the most while fielding questions for his glamorous wife from the audience.
And what questions they were!
Make no mistake, this night was all about Dynasty legend Joan, but what made it such a warm, witty and wonderful evening in the company of a showbiz great was the brilliantly down-to-earth questioning from Manchester, and Salford’s, finest.
Here we select some of the highlights of a suitably fabulous night at The Lyric Theatre in the company of the evergreen Joan.

She turned down Hollyoaks

When Dame Joan was asked if she’d ever consider going into a soap, the audience got the surprising response: “I was just asked to be in Hollyoaks... but I’m not doing it.”
Apparently there were not too many Hollyoaks fans in the audience as they all cheered at that! Percy was quick to respond, pretending to be on the phone, he quipped: “Salford says, ‘just pass on Hollyoaks’”
Joan added: “You know who is doing it? Linda Gray.” Yep, a fellow American TV legend - Dallas' own Sue-Ellen Ewing.

A-list anecdotes

Working during Hollywood’s golden era, Joan had plenty of stories to tell about her showbiz friends, and the odd enemy. Partying at Gene Kelly’s house, chatting with Marilyn Monroe who told her to “watch out for the wolves in Hollywood honey”, being booted by Bette Davis on one of her earliest films... We could have listened to Joan talk all night.

Top tip for looking fabulous?

Apparently Joan looks THAT good by plunging her face in iced water every day. It was a tip she picked up from Paul Newman, no less! Well, if it will make us look as good as Joanie...

Career Plan B

Asked what she would have been if not an actress, the rather surprising answer? “A private detective”.

When the questioner gets it a bit wrong...

A bold Mancunian leapt to his feet to ask Dame Joan: “How did you feel when you turned up on the set of Good Morning Britain and Piers Morgan had the same frock on as yourself?”
Joan looked a tad confused before saying: “do you mean Susannah Reid?” to roars of laughter from the audience.
“Wait until I tell Piers that,” she laughed. In answer to the question, she purred: “It was quite cute really, I thought it looked quite sweet.” Husband Percy added: “What were you going to do? Go home and change?” to which quick-witted Joan retorted: “Well, she could have! She’s got a changing room full of dresses...” Quite!

Badly Drawn Boy

Oh dear, it appears Manchester’s very own Damon Gough didn’t leave much of an impression on La Collins. When asked about the music video she collaborated with him on, 2008’s Spitting in the Wind, she said: “I can’t remember the name of the singer! I’d never done a music video so when they asked me I said: ‘ok, why not’.” She added: “It still haunts me”. Ah, we thought it was pretty special, actually.

She’s never had a stylist

Joanie is one of the world’s greatest style icons, with impeccable taste and elegance - and it’s all her own work.
“When I first went to Hollywood, they didn’t have stylists, you were just told to bring your own clothes. So I always took my own clothes on publicity shoots, and designed a lot of my own clothes too. Every time I’ve had a stylist I never fit into any of their clothes anyway!” For her Salford show, she dazzled in the first half in a sheer black lace and diamante-encrusted trouser suit, before changing into a full length and fabulous gold sparkling gown for the second half. Divine!

Marital advice

Clearly the audience were keen to get some of five-times-married Joan’s tips for romance. One woman couldn’t resist putting her friend’s story in the spotlight, saying “She’s been with her partner for 23 years, and 17 years of them engaged. She dresses up every Halloween as Miss Haversham. What else can she do?” With impeccable comic timing, Joan responded: “All I can say is, maybe you should... leave him!”

Even the interval had a splash of stardust

Dame Joan left stage for a brief intermission with Percy saying: “Here is a message from our sponsors” before the screen rolled with Joan’s memorable moments on TV adverts over the years. Her recent Snickers “diva” advert, a brilliant 80s promo for Sanyo cookers, and of course the legendary Cinzano splashed drink on the plane promo alongside Leonard Rossiter.

The parting shot

Thanking the crowd for their standing ovation, she says: “It’s been a wonderful life...If you live every day as if it were your last, one day it will be.” Ah, there ain't nothing like a Dame...

PRESS UPDATE : THE EVENING TIMES .. SEPTEMBER 5TH 2016

Hollywood Legend Joan Collins Looks Forward To Taking Centre Stage...
By Brian Beacom

Joan Collins is giving me heart palpitations, and not for the first time.
Sadly, this time the effect is very different from the one she had on the hormonal schoolboy who stared at the grass-skirted stunner slinking across white sands in 1957 movie, Our Girl Friday.

The acting legend is speaking from her home in the south of France, but there’s a lightning storm playing out.
And with every crack of thunder the line goes dead. Now, the idea of interviewing the lady who played Alexis Carrington already incites a little trepidation (Dame Joan reputedly doesn’t suffer fools, and indeed why should she?)
But if the essence of a good interview with a celebrity icon is about establishing rapport, then  chances here are about the same size as the bikini she wore in Girl Friday.
And there’s a little question of how to address her. Does she wish to be Dame Joan, the title she earned last year for services to charity? Or can we kick off with Christian names?
“You can call me Joan,” she says in soft, but clipped tones, perhaps a remnant from her RADA days.
And she’s immediately warm, perhaps helped by having a friend in common, or her Scottish connection, given Percy Gibson, her (“fifth and final”) husband is half Scots, with a cousin in Glasgow.
But then the line disappears. Drat. Will she slide off for a morning coffee?
This interview is to promote the only Scottish theatre date of Joan Collins Unscripted, a variety fare in which she will take questions from the audience, appearing alongside her husband.
But the lady doesn’t really have to sell tickets, given they are flying out of the box office. Thankfully, she calls back. And the line cuts out again. More anxious dialling. We’re reconnected. But are we?
Try an easy question. Could there be a risk, Joan, in taking questions from a nosy, cheeky Scots audience? You can just imagine them asking, ‘What was it like to date Warren Beatty?’ Or even, ‘Why were you a Brexiteer, Dame Joan?’
Our Girl Friday with George Cole
“I wouldn’t be doing it if I were trepidatious,” she says, in the confident voice of a woman who once had to contend with sexual advances from aged Hollywood moguls.
“It’s unscripted, so I will go out there on stage with Percy and we will wing it. But the questions will be based on certain subject categories; Hollywood, Dynasty, Health and Beauty... that sort of thing. It should be fun.” Dame Joan adds laughing; “I certainly like a challenge.”
She certainly does. Ms Collins was never likely to settle for a life more ordinary. Growing up in London the granddaughter of stage performers and daughter of a showbiz agent, acting life was inevitable.
On leaving RADA, small theatre roles soon led the striking young actress to a Rank Pictures contract, followed by a move to  Hollywood, aged just 22.
Even when she played a nun in the 1957 movie Sea Wife, Collins looked hotter than the Jamaican beaches where the movie was filmed.
There were darker times, of course.
Her first husband, fading film star Maxwell Reed, raped her after drugging her drink.
However, there seems to be a running thread in Dame Joan’s love life in that she tried exceptionally hard to make her marriages work. Is this connected to her relationship with her father, Joe Collins, a showbiz agent who continually told the teenage Joan she’d never make anything of herself?
Sea Wife with Richard Burton
“You have to understand I was brought up in a generation where women were subservient towards men,” she explains.
“I remember when I was 18 and under contract with Rank (Pictures) and I did a magazine interview. One of the questions I was asked was, ‘How are you going to do all the cooking and cleaning in your home?’ I replied, ‘Well, I won’t do any cooking or cleaning, I’ll be at the studios for 12 hours a day.’
Well, the headline appeared, and I will never forget it because it ran, ‘I Will Do No Cooking and Cleaning says Joan, who is not a real woman’. Can you believe it? I was castigated because I chose my own path in life and showed I wouldn’t kowtow to any man.”
Dame Joan reveals with real delight in her voice she has just finished filming a role that’s allowed her to scrub down. The Time of Their Lives, co-starring Pauline Collins, is a Thelma and Louise type romp.
“I play a washed-up actress who escapes from a retirement home,” she says excitedly. “I was so pleased to get this role, because I feel I’ve so often been passed up for roles because of the way I look.”
Meanwhile, Dallas star Linda Gray has announced she is going into Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks. Would Ms Collins consider a British soap? “Well, the producers offered it to me about three weeks ago,” she reveals of the role.
“I said no. Between the movie and the new show I wouldn’t have the time for anything else.”
Joan with Pauline Collins
Joan Collins, however, doesn’t concern herself with the roles that could have been.
“Really I don’t have regrets. Life is too short to be moaning about something that could have happened.”
Does she believe her attitude of embracing every new day with a tight hug has given her longevity? “I think so. But I think genes have a lot to do with it.
“My sister, up until the day she died (Jackie Collins passed away in September last year) looked very young.” The actress’s soft voice betrays her emotion. “I’m really sad about the death of my sister. It’s still so sad. I miss her every day. And I have pictures of her all over the house.”
She adds: “There is so much tragedy in the world I think it behoves those who have a good life to enjoy it.”
Joan with Jackie
Indeed. Does she feel she had to go through the incredible journey, the challenges, the disappointments, before she found real happiness with Percy, her Peruvian-born soul mate, with whom she laughs continually?
“I don’t know the answer to that,” she says, truthfully.  “What I do know is that life is not a bowl of cherries.”
The Hollywood legend laughs a lot, you discover. And she’s a grafter.
“No one has ever given me anything. And I’ve always paid my taxes,” she maintains, then adds, laughing: “I’ve never even applied for a bus pass.” Good gracious, Joan. We don’t want to see screen legends rummage in big handbags for bus passes. “No!” she laughs.
Sadly, the lighting interruption short-circuited a planned question about whether she still does her party piece, the splits, on stage. Let’s hope so.
But regardless, you just know her theatre show, which she proclaims to be her last, will be a hoot.

PRESS UPDATE : THE MIRROR .. AUGUST 31ST 2016

Dame Joan Collins: I miss my sister Jackie every day.. Now I'm there for Cliff, knowing what he went through.

It is a year since the Holllywood legend lost her sister to cancer and her pal Sir Cliff Richard's sister died earlier this month

Joan in Barbados with Cliff & Jack Rich

As scheming Alexis Colby in the sex and shoulder pads 80s supersoap Dynasty, Joan Collins took no prisoners. Likewise in  movies The Bitch and The Stud, she was not a woman to mess with.
In real life, though? Assertive, definitely. Feisty, for sure. But a bitch, no.
Dame Joan Collins , it turns out, can be a real sweetheart.
Especially if you’re one of her friends, like Sir Cliff Richard , whose sister Donna Goulden died, aged 73, earlier this month .
Joan knows what her old pal is going through. Because it will soon be a year since she lost her younger sister Jackie to breast cancer, aged 77 .

Joan & Jackie in Beverly Hills in 2014

She says: “I miss her every day. We were very close. Obviously it’s been a tough year.”
Joan and Cliff have been friends for more than three decades and she has been by his side through his tragedies.
She says: “He is a lovely, lovely man and a good friend. We went to stay with him in Barbados last year and I’ve known him for over 30 years.”
Sir Cliff, is planning to sue the BBC after the corporation filmed his house being raided by South Yorkshire Police in 2014 .
It was part of a historical sex abuse inquiry which was dropped in June .
When his plans are mentioned, Joan’s feisty side comes out.
“Good,” she says. “When you have a reputation shredded to tatters by particular people, he has every right to take legal action. I hate the way Cliff has been hung out to dry. He never did it.
“I think what happens is when somebody comes to be so loved by the public, like Cliff, some people want to cut them down to size. It’s happened a lot.

“I think celebrities have to be careful where they tread these days. You have to watch what you say because everybody seems to have such a thin skin.”
Sir Cliff has garnered a lot of sympathy since the inquiry was dropped. But Joan’s loyalty stretches to chums who may, perhaps, be less popular.

Joan with Cliff in a 60's tv special

“What do you think of Biggins?” she asks suddenly.
Christopher Biggins, is a close friend of the actress and was booted off Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother after cracking a sick anti-semitic joke . Before I can answer, Joan says: “He is one of my best friends. I feel very sorry for him. He is not nasty.

Joan with Biggins
“He is one of the kindest, most gentle, most charitable human beings who has ever lived.”
Dame Joan, has been a Hollywood star for more than 60 years.
The daughter of a dance teacher and a theatrical agent, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and signed to Rank Studios in 1951 at the age of 17.
Five years later the legendary Hollywood director Howard Hawks chose her for Land Of The Pharaohs, a big-budget epic.
She left England for Hollywood and went on to appear in television shows like Batman and Star Trek as well as making several of those notorious Bitch and Stud movies, based on her sister’s novels.
But her big comeback was playing Alexis the super schemer in Dynasty from 1981-89.
Joan & Jackie with Peter Sellers in 1979
Alexis was a strong female character and Joan has strong views about how women are treated on TV and in the movies.
“I think it is time we stopped defining people by their ages,” she says.
“I think people should be defined by as old as they act, look and feel. I know many women not in showbusiness who absolutely refuse to talk about their ages or tell anybody how old they are. Sadly they are obsessed with it, but with women and not with men.
“Women have to be a lot better at what they do than men because they are judged more severely.
“They are judged not only on their work output but on their appearance and their attitude.
“There was a certain amount of that during Dynasty.
“There was a misogynistic side to some of the producers – an attitude of ‘why should she tell us what to do?’.
“Women who are strong and assertive are too often called bossy bitches, men who are strong and assertive are called strong and assertive businessmen.”
Joan with Diahann Carroll in Dynasty

Take it as read, then, that Joan is happy to portray herself as a strong and assertive woman.
One not without her anxieties, however. There are several moments during our interview when she falls silent as a thunderstorm rages around her French home. “I hope I don’t get hit by it,” she says.
Hopefully the weather will be less threatening in the UK when Joan takes her one-woman show on the road.
She will visit 12 towns and cities with her Joan Collins Unscripted show, where the audience will ask her questions.
“I have several new stories I’m going to tell on stage,” she says.
“People want to hear about the golden days of Hollywood, but most of this show is going to be in the hands of the audience. They will be able to ask me any question they want. Except politics.”
And then she shrieks: “Oh god, that’s lightning,” before returning to her tour, saying: “As long as somebody doesn’t ask me who the best kisser is in the movies...although that is quite a
fun question.”
While this could be Joan’s final tour, she won’t become a couch potato.
“I’ve written 16 books and I’ll probably write another one. I’m on tour and I’m a very active person,” she says.
“My mother used to call me Miss Perpetual Motion because I never kept still.”
Joan’s husband, film producer Percy Gibson, will be master of ceremonies for the stage show. Their 14-year marriage is Joan’s fifth – and also her longest. She credits Percy with being
her “soulmate”.
She says: “We are with each other 24/7. We love each other. We bicker and banter. I have finally found my person.”
After riding the storms of four previous marriages, Dame Joan deserves this period of calm.
