TIME AND SPACE

Joan Collins on the joys of nesting, a cockroach invasion and a haunting stay in Venice

‘Suddenly a knife that had been hanging on the wall shot across the room and embedded itself in the mantle. Then an urn came crashing down’
Interview by Danny Scott
When it comes to how my home should look, I know exactly what I want, so having an interior designer would be a complete waste of time. All I need is a contractor with a certain amount of flair to execute my visions.
What I’ve always found is that the building will let you know what the theme should be. In France I’ve gone for Provençal, New York is deco, LA is ultramodern and London is stately empire with dashes of Louis XIV.
Which one is your favourite?
Just recently, while I was recovering from a heavy cold, I decided my favourite room is my bedroom in London. This is where I feel cosiest and safest. It’s a warm and soothing space, covered entirely in peach — peach drapes, peach sofa, peach carpet and peach sheets. It’s very Madame du Barry. Imagine the most comfortable suite at the Ritz, with a huge balcony and french windows that span the entire room.
What item could you not live without?
Lipstick! Nothing can pick me up like a wonderful pink-red lipstick. Oh, and my American Express card.
Which book has survived all moves?
I never tire of Dickens. He is so descriptive and witty. His stories move at a galloping pace and he rarely — I would venture never — wastes words. You never find storylines that don’t resolve or characters who don’t have a reason to be. Great Expectations, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities... I go back to them again and again, and always find something new.
Do you get homesick?
Yes. I’m a big believer in nesting. If I’m travelling with a play or my one-woman show, I pack things that make me feel I’m back at home — family photographs, pillows with witty sayings. I do this with my dressing rooms, too.

Do you have your own sanctuary?
Oh, yes. Percy [Collins’s fifth husband, the theatre producer Percy Gibson] likes to say that whenever he’s looking for me, he heads straight for my closet, where I’m forever reorganising. And when I’m looking for him, it’s in the office, where he’ll be furiously typing at his computer.
Is Percy any good at DIY?
Oh, he’s a DIY pro! My sister, Jackie, lost count of the jobs that Percy could handle — electrician, carpenter, picture framer, jewellery repairer. On and on.
What was your worst house experience?
Arriving in New York with my infant children, we shared an old brownstone with friends, the Bricusses [the composer Leslie Bricusse and the actress Yvonne Romain], and their son, Adam. We were immediately invaded by an army of cockroaches. They even found their way into the children’s cribs. We had to evacuate in the middle of the night and, to this day, we refer to that house as the “Maison Cafard”.
I also had a scary stay in a palazzo in Venice. A group of us landed in the worst thunderstorm in decades. At dinner, the windows kept flinging open and the lashing rain was terrifying. On the wall was a painting of a beautiful woman who had been the lady of the house — and she’d been murdered. No one knows how, but that evening the little foil-coated almonds that decorated the table had been formed in the shape of a body. The butler told us that was where the lady had been found. Suddenly a knife that had been hanging on the wall shot across the room and embedded itself in the mantle. Then an urn came crashing down. We packed and moved to the Gritti hotel.
And your worst property mistake?
Not buying a fabulous penthouse with a balcony overlooking Manhattan at the Empire House. It was offered to Tony [Joan’s second husband, Anthony Newley] and me for $150,000 in the 1960s, and would probably be worth tens of millions today. I begged Tony to buy it when he was the toast of Broadway, but his financial advisers didn’t want him to own any property for tax reasons. Such a shame.
Do you garden?
I am a hopeless gardener, but, as Jack Benny said, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practise, practise, practise.” So, every year in the south of France, my first stop is the garden centre to buy all my favourites. Then I organise my husband and any house guests — planting, trimming, lugging pots and generally mucking in. Don’t come and visit if you want to keep your hands clean.
The one that got away — the dream home you almost had?
I always say, “Never miss anything that can’t miss you.” However, my house on Cabrillo Drive, in Beverly Hills, caused a lot of heartache. I didn’t want to sell it, but an accountant didn’t file my taxes for two years, so I had no choice. I consoled myself by buying a beautiful flat in London.

PRESS UPDATE : DAILY EXPRESS .. TUESDAY JANUARY 8TH 2019 ..

Joan Collins: How can I retire when I've got four homes to run?

As she prepares to tour with her one-woman show, the forthright star gives SUE CRAWFORD both barrels on the decline of female glamour, Strictly and the importance of keeping busy

By Sue Crawford
SHE'S been in showbusiness for seven decades and has well and truly earned her place as a great British icon, but don't even think about asking Dame Joan Collins whether she's ready to retire. "I have to say the most boring question I'm asked is if I'm going to retire!" she says with that famous suffer-no-fools glint in her eyes. "I'm very happy doing what I'm doing." She adds: "I don't have a bucket list. I've done everything that I want to do. What would I do if I retired? Who's going to support me? It takes a lot of money to run four homes and I love working."

The properties she refers to are in London, New York, Los Angeles and the south of France. But while London-born Joan leads an international life, ask her if she still feels British and she doesn't hold back.
For while modern PR-savvy celebrities carefully curate their public utterances for fear of being misrepresented and attacked on social media, the legendary actress still retains her famously dry wit and refreshingly never minces her words.
"English actually," she says briskly. "Although that's not considered okay to say. Strangely enough you can say you're Scottish or Welsh or Irish, but for some reason a lot of people get offended when you say you're English? Why? "I don't care what people say. I've got to a stage in my life where I say what I think, but within reason. Obviously you mustn't hurt people's feelings and you try not to be politically incorrect, but I read a wonderful thing about Ralph Fiennes the other day.
"He said: 'I am so sick of people telling me what I can and cannot say.' And I think he's quite a liberal. So I circumvent that by being quite careful what I say." Joan's idea of careful however is probably quite different to most people's and in the next breath she's sharing her fabulously uncompromising views on beauty.
"I don't understand women who don't moisturise or use night cream," she says firmly. "I'm very disciplined. I don't go to bed without always thoroughly taking off my make-up and always putting on night cream. My mother had me and my sister Jackie doing that when we were 14."

She adds: "As a young teenager I was fascinated by the styles of the 20s, 30s and 40s, I was drawn to the women of that era and then I started watching the movies and looking at photographs of all the actresses of that time. What they wore was impeccable and beautiful."
Those days are of course long gone and Joan can't resist sharing her thoughts on why that is the case. "Women had more time to spend on themselves then because they weren't addicted to television, Instagram and Twitter and all these things people do today," she says with typical candour.
"I heard that the average was two to four hours a day on devices. Now if you do that you don't really have much time to exercise or take care of your skin.
"I also think that the standard of clothes in the shops is pretty low. I don't really think there's much in the shops that I like that's affordable frankly, it seems to me that there are so many different types of jeans, anoraks, coats and jumpers that are really quite boring."
That's a word you would never use about her dress sense. At 85 Dame Joan cuts an impressive figure. Glamorous, trim, spritely and immaculately turned-out, she has the appearance of a woman decades younger - and the career of one too.
Last year she joined the cast of the Emmy award-winning US series American Horror Story, this month she's popping over to Hawaii to film a guest-starring role on Hawaii Five-0 and she's currently preparing for next month's UK tour of her new one-woman stage show Unscripted. The show promises a wealth of stories and gossip from a career which saw her begin as a 1950s Hollywood starlet, before moving on to cult 1970s films, The Stud and The Bitch, based on the best-selling novels written by her younger sister Jackie.
OF COURSE there will be plenty of tales too from the role that established her as one of the biggest stars on the globe - that of scheming vixen Alexis Carrington on the American prime-time soap opera Dynasty. Joan boosted the series' ratings from the moment she arrived and stayed for eight years.
"During my show I tell stories and recount incidents from my career that I haven't told before. We also have loads of movie clips of me working with Gene Kelly or Paul Newman or Bette Davis," she says.
"There's a lot of audience participation too - about half of it is questions from the audience. Its huge fun, I wouldn't do it if it was nerve-wracking. Life's too short."
Accompanying Joan on stage for some witty repartee is her husband of 17 years Percy Gibson. After her four previous marriages, Percy has been Joan's rock and they hit on the idea of appearing together after she complained it was too hard being on stage on her own.
The show provides fans with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a glimpse into a bygone era; on her very first day at work at 20th Century Fox Joan spotted Lana Turner, Richard Burton, Susan Hayward and Robert Wagner. It was an age where leading ladies always looked the part and Joan, having developed a love of fashion back in London, immediately fitted right in.
What Joan does next remains to be seen but one place we will never see her twirling her heels is on the Strictly dance floor.
"Are you serious? You've got to be joking!" she laughs. "I love Strictly, it's very good, but no!"
Dame Joan will be touring in Unscripted throughout the UK in February. For tickets go to: seetickets.com

Joan Collins: 'My father warned me not to trust showbiz men'

Veteran actress Dame Joan Collins meets Francine White and tells all about her men, #MeToo and her only secret weakness!
Francine White
January 3, 2019

Dame Joan Collins. The name is synonymous with glamour and in the flesh, she doesn’t disappoint. She’s taller than I imagined, enveloped in a pink Max Mara coat, her eye make up and lippy are perfect. Actually she looks amazing.
Then there’s the voice, clear as a bell and cut-glass sharp. When I arrive at The Langham where Dame Joan and I are to meet, the restaurant hostess asks me discreetly how one should address a Dame. Now, in her presence I wonder whether I should curtsey.
My husband and her husband, Percy Gibson, hover in the background but soon head off the bar, leaving me alone with her.
There is an instant warmth from her and my fears that she will be unapproachable or frosty soon dispel. In fact, she’s very funny, candid and happy to discuss anything. And there’s plenty to discuss. Her career has spanned six decades and she’s starred in more than 70 British and Hollywood movies, hit TV shows and countless theatre tours.
Yet her father, theatrical agent Joe Collins, didn’t want her to become an actress. “He knew the perils of the business. He said ‘You’re a pretty young girl, people will try and take advantage of you.’ He gave me good warnings. He was the one who said, ‘if people try to take advantage of you, knee them in the downstairs department.’”
Starting out as an ingénue aged 17, signed to Rank, she was a target for producers and directors with more than movies on their minds. “#MeToo is nothing new,” she says.
I suggest that in some cases, it’s how you handle it. “I think you should put that and I’ll say I agree! I had lots of propositions from people right at the top down. One time I went to meet a producer, he was in the bath! You can imagine what he was doing. I left very quickly. Needless to say, I didn’t get the part. I was only young, 25 or something. I was going out with Warren Beatty at the time.”
Collins’ father was Jewish and two of her husbands were, too. “Oh yes I am half Jewish. My father had two sisters, my Jewish aunts. Lalla and Pauline, I used to design clothes for my mother Elsa and them. This was in the period when I wanted to be a dress designer.”
She adds “Mum was Church of England, Daddy was Jewish but we weren’t religious at all. We didn’t celebrate at all. I do feel Jewish, but I feel Christian as well.”
Her second husband was the Jewish actor and singer Anthony Newley, father of two of her children, Tara and Sacha. That ended in divorce. It would seem that heritage will out — in a way — as Tara Newley has embraced Kabbalah and married publisher Nick Arkle at The Kabbalah Centre in 2016.
“She wished me happy Chanukah the other day,” says Collins, laughing “I said ‘I didn’t get you a card, I’m sorry.’ She absolutely is completely into it. She does all the holidays and goes to kabbalah meetings five or six times a year.”
Collins’ youngest daughter, Katie was involved in a near fatal car crash when she was 12: “It was really a situation of ‘I might not be religious, but I am praying to every god there is that my daughter will get well.’ Thank God she did. I did ask a rabbi for guidance and a Buddhist monk and a Catholic priest as well.”
Collins has always known her own mind. She turned her back on the drug culture of Hollywood, always refusing to take part. “I once blew a bowl of cocaine over Sammy Davis Junior’s blue velvet jacket.” she said recently. Her only weakness is for chocolate, she tells me.
She has always fought to be paid equally to male actors and has usually won. When she starred in Dynasty, in the 1980s, she became the highest paid actress on TV.
Indeed, the only area her judgement and strength seems to have failed her was in her choice of men. Her first marriage to Maxwell Reed was brief. After her divorce from Newley, she wed Jewish businessman Ron Kass, father of her daughter Katie. That, too, ended in divorce. Then came her one completely disastrous marriage, to Swedish pop star Peter Holm.
But fortunately even that is now behind her. Her fifth husband, theatrical producer Percy Gibson, is thirty years younger than her and they clearly adore each other. He and my hubby are at the bar, getting on like a house on fire. Collins approves and says to me; “Look at our handsome husbands over there!”
The couple met when he was Company Manager on a US tour of the play Love Letters that Collins was starring in. “I regret the marriage to Peter Holm, that was two steps backwards and it put me off marriage for a long time. It wasn’t until I met Percy that I felt ready. We proposed right after 9/11 because we realised that life is very short, and we realised we loved each other deeply enough to commit.”
She’s about to embark on a tour, Joan Collins Unscripted, where audience members get to ask her anything at all. What if they ask her something she doesn’t want to answer?
“I say I don’t want to answer that question. Very simple, I’m not 12 years old.
“People are very respectful actually, sometimes they ask racy questions, I just deflect them. We had two girls in the audience with microphones, sometimes for fun we dress them as Alexis and Krystal.” She’s referring, of course, to her character in Dynasty, Alexis Colby and her screen bête noir, Krystal Carrington.
Dame Joan with Percy Gibson
Dynasty ran for nine seasons from 1981, and was rebooted last year. The soap opera, created by the Jewish husband and wife team Richard and Esther Shapiro and produced by Aaron Spelling, turned around the fortunes of Collins who found that roles in film for her dried up in the 1970s. “When I first started, they wanted me to wear tweed suits and pill box hats like Jackie Kennedy. I said ‘I’m not doing that! She’s haute couture’. Big shoulder pads had just come in and I said, ‘I love that look’, That’s what we did.”
If she was to meet the young Joan Collins now, what advice would she give; “You’re better than people say you are. I think I got a lot of negativity when I started. ‘She can’t act, she’s pretty and good looking, coasting on her looks.’ Vivien Leigh told me once that she wasn’t taken seriously as an actress until she started to lose her looks. She was a great beauty. But she was always met with negativity. She married Laurence Olivier, he was good looking, beautiful, nothing stopped him. It’s very unfair. I got tarred and feathered with it. But I’m used to that kind of negativity, I got a lot of it. And my reviews, oh my god! Really bad! I got used to it and I’m still here and working.”
Last year she made a film with Pauline Collins, The Time of Their Lives, a sort of octogenarian road trip. She hints there may be a sequel. Most recently she was cast in cult US TV show American Horror Story: “I met Ryan Murphy who is the producer, writer, creator, everything. He’s the $300 million man! He’s just done a huge deal with Netflix. He did Glee, The Assasination of Gianni Versace, The People Versus OJ. I met him at a party, we chatted, he said he was a big fan of mine which is always nice to hear. He said he had an idea for me. Two weeks later I got a call from my agent saying they’d like you to do American Horror Story so I was thrilled.”
She plays several different characters: “I am a cannibal, I am a witch, I am an ex-movie star, the wife of the ex-head of MGM. She drops names and says things like ‘Being disappointed, dear, is like going to bed with Yul Brynner.’”
She laughs, “Isn’t that fabulous?”
Truly fabulous. As is Dame Joan Collins.

Joan Collins is touring the UK from February 15.
