But, as usual, the tone of the evening is set by the host, and this year . . . oh dear, where did they find Mr Jo Koy, a so-called comedian of the ‘new wave’ (i.e. ‘woke’)?</p><p class="mol-para-with-font" style="background-color: white; font-family: graphik, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: -0.16px; margin: 0px 0px 16px; min-height: 0px; padding: 0px;">He was about as funny as Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions. He’s infamous for being fired after a hot mic picked up Donald Trump boasting to him in 2005 of grabbing women ‘by the p***y’.</p><p class="mol-para-with-font" style="background-color: white; font-family: graphik, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: -0.16px; margin: 0px 0px 16px; min-height: 0px; padding: 0px;">He immediately informed me that he was looking for a new wife and would I be interested? It was fortunate that I did. It was Ted Sarandos, the head of Netflix.</p><p class="mol-para-with-font" style="background-color: white; font-family: graphik, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: -0.16px; margin: 0px 0px 16px; min-height: 0px; padding: 0px;">He was a most charming man (rare in a studio boss) and I recounted our trials and tribulations, whereupon he said, ‘Don’t you worry, that won’t happen at my party’, to which we had been invited.</p><p class="mol-para-with-font" style="background-color: white; font-family: graphik, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: -0.16px; margin: 0px 0px 16px; min-height: 0px; padding: 0px;">True to his word, the doors opened as if I was the most cherished of beings, and I was escorted to a VIP area where we were fed and watered and we danced, to the most danceable hits of the 1970s and 1980s spun by the DJ. I try to express that in the book. My Alice in Wonderland, little girl, goggly-eyed, ‘Wow, this is like the movies that I really enjoyed.’ So I started writing.</p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 16.5px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-alternates: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-variant-position: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; letter-spacing: -0.165px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Q: That period of Hollywood in the ’50s is one of the most glamorous times, and you capture that. But there’s also a dark side to that.</span></p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 16.5px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-alternates: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-variant-position: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; letter-spacing: -0.165px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">A:</span> Oh my gosh, yes. I did go into the things that young women, in all professions, not just in the acting profession, are expected to put up with. The most misogynist crap from men who just expect the girls to take it. This happened a lot to me, first, in my first film in England when I was 17.</p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 16.5px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-alternates: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-variant-position: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; letter-spacing: -0.165px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I put this story in the book. I went to an older actress, and I told her about it. And she said something like, ‘That’s what this is like. If you don’t like it, you better get out.’ So I found ways to deal with it. Mostly laughing at men. That’s the biggest killer of a man who’s got the hots. It really is.</p><p style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size: 16.5px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-alternates: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-variant-position: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; letter-spacing: -0.165px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I would love to see this end, you know. In presenting both sides of their romance, certain inconsistencies emerge by allowing Mr. Gibson’s voice to interject into the story.</p><p data-bind="text: $data" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; hyphenate-character: "-"; margin: 0px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; text-overflow: ellipsis; vertical-align: baseline;">“It was the publisher’s idea,” she told me. But she found it delightful, and she was right. The juxtaposition creates a charming portrait of them as a couple. It’s clear they cherish one another.</p><p data-bind="text: $data" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; hyphenate-character: "-"; margin: 0px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; text-overflow: ellipsis; vertical-align: baseline;">Mr. Gibson writes about being in awe of Ms. Collins from the moment they met. But he particularly admires her work ethic. I’m a big fan of memoirs that discuss the work — being glamorous and talented might seem easy, but it’s the work that pays off. And Ms. Collins works hard.</p><p data-bind="text: $data" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; hyphenate-character: "-"; margin: 0px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; text-overflow: ellipsis; vertical-align: baseline;">She is a professional, of course. Even now, she’s passionately working on a biopic of Wallis Simpson, who is much maligned in Ms. Collins’s opinion. And Ms. Collins cares about what she puts out into the world. Someone who cared less would not be interested in writing eight memoirs.</p><p data-bind="text: $data" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; hyphenate-character: "-"; margin: 0px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; text-overflow: ellipsis; vertical-align: baseline;">Friend-dropping</p><p data-bind="text: $data" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; hyphenate-character: "-"; margin: 0px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; text-overflow: ellipsis; vertical-align: baseline;">“Did you like the book?” I was caught off guard when she asked me that.
